Acne is a chronic skin condition that causes spots and pimples, especially on the face though it can also be seen on chest, back, shoulders, and neck. There is a reason why it’s called “common” acne and that’s because nearly everyone has suffered from it, at some point. It is normally seen around puberty when the oil glands become active, but that’s not the only reason; acne can occur at any age.
Why do we get acne?
We get acne when pores get clogged due to oil secretion. The sebaceous glands (oil glands) that are at the base of the hair follicles secrete oil blocking the follicle opening. If the follicle openings are large, acne can be noticed in the form of blackheads and when the openings are small, whiteheads are seen. When the follicles get blocked and oil collects underneath the skin, pimples start to grow. In some cases, they may get infected and we may notice some pus formation.
Acne occurs in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, pimples, and nodules. Because it is a disease by the oil glands, people with oily skin tend to suffer more.
Myth has it that acne is a result of poor hygiene, unhealthy food habits, etc. Well, that isn’t true. Acne is hormonal. Factors like stress can aggravate acne but definitely doesn’t cause it.
Acne is not dangerous, but it can leave acne scars. Today, acne scars is also completely treatable.

Acne / Pimple Treatment in Bangalore:
The treatment largely depends on the type of acne: mild or moderate to severe.
For treating mild acne, normally a mild face wash and topical ointments can do the trick. In a separate article, I have exhaustively covered the role of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne. Salicylic acid helps reduce the size of the pimple and benzoyl peroxide kills the acne-causing bacteria.
Moderate to severe acne may require stronger medication. Oral and/or topical antibiotics and retinoids. If there are inflamed acne cysts then we rupture them using injections to prevent scarring and facilitate healing.
